Evening/Night Viewing

Whether you're joining me for the monthly stargazing in Fairmount Park or adding me and my trusty telescope to your next outdoor gathering, there is always a lot to see in the night sky! I use a Celestron CPC 800 XLT telescope, just like the ones you will find in the Holt & Miller Observatory. This is a reflecting telescope with an 8" mirror.

During a stargazing event, or as I like to call them, Star Parties, you will not only get to check out the Moon, planets, and stars, but I will also often get into some more science fun! I'll tell you how scientists are able to determine what distant planets and stars are made of, describe the different types of telescopes and how they function, as well as a whole host of other spacey science fun facts to add some context to your stargazing.

Daytime Viewing

NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN!

Now that we've got that important PSA out of the way, you'll be happy to know that I have a few safe options for solar observing! When using my Celestron telescope, I use a white light filter to block out approximately 99% of the sun's light. This enables us to take a closer look at the sun while protecting our eyes. This type of filter will allow us to see any sun spots that may be visible on that particular day.

As we check out our home star, I will (as always) share a bunch of science fun facts. I will talk about the types of telescopes and how they work, sun spots, solar flares, and the different types of tools scientists use for solar observing.

Weather Disclaimer
View of the day/night sky is subject to weather conditions. The telescope can not see through clouds, so there must be a clear sky for telescope viewing to be possible. In the event of poor weather, indoor options can be discussed.

Rates

For each of the packages above, my base rate is $150 per hour plus a $25 travel fee. This helps cover supplies, time, and my assistant. I always bring an assistant to help with transporting materials, ensuring everyone is able to enjoy the activities, and making certain that we keep science safe and fun for everyone.

To book, please email me at buddy.muhler@gmail.com. I will reserve your date with a 50% down payment with the other 50% due the day of the event.
